Letter: Know Your Candidates

Do the homework early

Thank you for your editorial urging voters to get to know their candidates before marking their ballot ("Learn about candidates to cast informed votes," Monday). This is particularly important in judicial races, which traditionally receive less attention than other races.

Yet Supreme Court justices and judges at the appellate and local level carry a significant responsibility, and it's our job as voters to know if judicial candidates are qualified and will uphold the proper role of the court. Incumbent judges should be analyzed to see if they are following the rule of the law and applying it properly on a case-by-case basis.

In addition to statewide races for the Texas Supreme Court, Bexar County voters in November will decide on contested races for three district court judgeships.

Citizens Against Lawsuit Abuse of Central Texas urges Texas voters to be diligent in their research of judicial candidates. Between now and the November general election, please take the time to learn about judicial candidates' backgrounds and qualifications for the job.
