Letter: Civil Justice Reforms Good for Texas Economy

Dear Editor,

A recent economic study shows that Texas’ civil justice reforms have increased permanent jobs and brought in new revenue. This is good news, and our Legislature deserves recognition and thanks for working to rein in the lawsuit abuse that has long tarnished the Lone Star State.

Yet even as Texas lawmakers have made great strides to shut down the litigation lottery in Texas, some personal injury lawyers are busy inventing new ways to sue or exploiting loopholes in existing law.

During the last legislative session, 394 bills were filed that would have “created new causes of legal action, created new places to sue and expanded liability increasing the opportunity for Texas businesses, both large and small, to be sued,” according to published reports.

Our work in Texas is far from done.  We need to stand firm against those who would abuse our system and undo progress we’ve made in Texas.
