Lawsuit Abuse Awareness Week
County Judges, County Commissioners, Mayors and City Councils from across Central Texas joined Citizens Against Lawsuit Abuse (CALA) of Central Texas to officially declare Oct. 5-9 as "Lawsuit Abuse Awareness Week" in Texas and called on citizens to recognize the tremendous burden lawsuits place on taxpayers and consumers.
Some issued official proclamations recognizing that "the abuse of Texas courts hurts taxpayers who have to pay the cost for the endless lawsuits brought against city and county governments."
The officials explain that taxpayer funds that could be spent on schools, parks or police are instead spent on fighting frivolous lawsuits. The proclamations also recognize how lawsuit abuse adversely impacts cities' abilities to create new jobs.
Some of the officials who have signed Lawsuit Abuse Awareness Week proclamations include Leander Mayor John Cowman, San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro, Temple Mayor William A. Jones, III, and Williamson County Judge Dan Gattis.
